Algal blooms can be many colors, including blue-green, yellow, brown, pink, and red. Not all algal blooms are toxic, but research indicates that a growing number are. Algal bloom and water hyacinth are some of the most common forms of eutrophication, which depletes the supply of oxygen, leading to the death of animal life. This article seeks to provide a better understanding of the causes, effects, and possible solutions for an algal bloom. Harmful algal blooms in freshwater lakes and rivers, or at estuaries, where rivers flow into the ocean, are caused by cyanobacteria, which were originally known as "blue-green algae". Some cyanobacteria can produce hazardous toxins, such as microcystins, hepatotoxins that target the liver of mammals. Harmful algal blooms can outcompete native plants for resources, increase bacterial growth and produce dangerous toxins that can affect and even kill people and animals.

These blooms occur when a lake/water body has a high concentration of nutrients (especially phosphorus). Harmful Algal Blooms, or HABs, are becoming a huge environmental and public health issue, affecting communities in all 50 states and globally, learn more! Algal blooms may occur in fresh water as well as marine environments. Algal bloom events involving toxic or other harmful phytoplantons are called Harmful algal blooms.

Algal blooms may occur in fresh water as well as marine environments. Algal bloom events involving toxic or other harmful phytoplantons are called Harmful algal blooms. Bright green blooms in freshwater systems are frequently a result of cyanobacteria (colloquially known as blue-green algae) such as Microcystis.

Blooms may become more frequent as the earth warms and the levels of nutrients in our waters increase. An algal bloom or marine bloom or water bloom is a rapid increase in the population of algae in an aquatic system. Algal blooms may occur in freshwater as well as marine environments. Typically Algal blooms are dense layers of tiny green plants that occur on the surface of lakes and other bodies of water when there is an overabundance of nutrients (primarily phosphorus) on which algae depend.

Algal Bloom. Algal blooms are mass accumulations of cells of one or more phytoplankton species that arise when growth rates (controlled by resource supply, i.e., bottom-up factors) exceed mortality rates (controlled by pathogens, parasitoids, predators, i.e., top-down factors). An algal bloom is a kind of algae who increases their population rapidly. They mainly live in freshwater or marine water systems and they are mainly recognised by the discoloration in the water with the help of their pigments. Algal blooms are natural phenomena that occurred before human development in response to changes in temperature, light, rainfall, or changes in limiting nutrients.
