This article undertakes a diachronic survey of the literary and artistic reception of Valerius Flaccus’Argonautica, from the Flavian period down to the 20th century. The epic was influential in its own time, but has left fewer marks on the literature of later antiquity. It appears to have been in only limited circulation in the medieval period: but Chaucer, for one, makes various references

Flaccus argonautica

VALERIUS FLACCUS was a Roman poet who flourished in the late C1st A.D. during the reign of the Emperor Vespasian. His only surviving work is an unfinished epic poem entitled the Argonautica, describing the voyage of the Argonauts in their quest for the golden fleece. The work differs in many respects from the like-themed Argonautica of Apollonius Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica is one of the most significant surviving works of Flavian epic, which has recently become much more popular as a field of study and teaching in Latin literature. This is the first commentary in English directly tailored to the needs of graduate and advanced undergraduate students. It provides an introduction to the major themes of the poem and the structure and Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica narrates the mythological quest for the Golden Fleece and the early stages of the ill-fated love affair of Jason and Medea, a tale already familiar from Greek epic tragedy, but given a Roman twist by the first-century AD epic poet. This book provides readers who have not yet encountered the Argonautica with a general introduction to the work and, through 2017-04-15 · Valerius Flaccus.

His only known work, the Argonautica is Virgilian in style. In his prologue, Valerius invokes Vespasian, and the poem was in part intended to celebrate his achievements in establishing Roman rule in Britain.
